Kansas Vehicle Registration

Kansas vehicle registration law requires that owners of motor vehicles have to register their motor vehicle with the Division of Motor Vehicles of Kansas before driving it on the road. You should register your motor vehicle within thirty (30) days of getting it. New residents of Kansas have ninety (90) days to properly get a KS vehicle registration. You will need a new KS registration when:
• You move into the state of Kansas from another state as a permanent resident
• You inherit, buy, or are gifted a new vehicle

Paperwork for your Kansas Vehicle Registration

• A Title application and KS Registration application, both which should be filled out.
• Proof of Insurance that is valid in Kansas.
• A signed and notarized statement of origin from the Manufacturer, also called a MSO form.
• Proof of your payment of personal property taxes in either Kansas or your previous residence.
• A filled out Odometer Disclosure Statement if your vehicle had a previous owner.
• Your sales tax receipt that you received when you bought the vehicle from a dealer.
• The title from, signed by the previous vehicle owner, if applicable. If you do not have this document, you will have to replace it.
• An Affidavit of Purchase Price that shows the purchase price of the motor vehicle or a bill of sale.
• Inspection papers from a vehicle inspection that passes your vehicle, if it is from out of state.

KS registration fees are calculated at your local county treasurer’s office and will vary based on your situation. The local county treasurer’s office will charge a KS vehicle registration fee based on the weight, sales tax, property tax, and any other KS registration fees based on your specific county of residence.

Getting your Kansas Vehicle Registration and Plates

Now that you have organized all of your needed paperwork, you can go and get your KS registration. At the local county treasurer’s office, you will also be given license plates and decals during the KS vehicle registration process. You can choose to receive standard plates, or you can opt for specialty and personalized plates.

Renewing your KS Vehicle Registration

The Division of Motor Vehicles notifies Kansas vehicle owners of the approaching expiration date of their motor vehicle KS registration by mail. KS registrations can be renewed prior to the expiration date either through the mail, by phone, in person, or by using the online service provided by the Division of Motor Vehicles.
